Haruka Horiuchi – DesCours 2010 – Breathing Boundary

This installation, presented for the 2010 DesCours event in New Orleans, is described in the designers words as below:

The Breathing Boundary dynamically blurs the border between adjacent spaces by continuously transforming its own form, volume and permeability.  As the wall inhales and exhales, the boundary itself thickens and dissipates; the zone between the distinct spaces alternately materializes and dissolves.  Though inhabitants cannot control the pace and trajectory of the wall’s constant metamorphosis, we may peer beyond, reach across, and step through this breathing barrier as it slowly shifts and changes.
