INSTALLATION SITE #8
Cooper Design Space – Penthouse Floor (11th Floor)
860 S. Los Angeles
Fashion District, Downtown Los Angeles
Filipa Valente – Liminoid Garden
The liminoid space of the urbanscape is where we create new cultural expressions and relationships with our surroundings. This Liminoid Garden* – an interactive machine interface between the environment, the city and its users – breathes and feeds itself on the real-time movements and conditions of the city, giving awareness to the audience while simultaneously making him/her part of the behavior.
Set in the context of Downtown Los Angeles, a bouquet of artificial ecology mechanisms communicate between the penthouse of the Cooper Design building and the city at large. The mechanical blooms are equipped with electronic controllers that receive readings of light, temperature and pollution from the exterior and reinterpret these into physical movements and light fluctuations. The pieces then reflect a kind of breathing behavior that is altered by the actions of audience members – creating a play space between conditions of the outside and inside.
The interaction between machine, environment and people will be explored by the Heidi Duckler dance group in a series of programmed short (15min ) performances that will occur February 13th, 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd at 7:30pm and 8:30pm.
Filipa Valente (limiLAB) lives in Los Angeles, USA, where she pursues her interactive experience design work and currently is an Associate and lead interactive designer at Synthesis Design + Architecture in downtown Los Angeles. She completed the BSc and Masters in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London 04’ and 08’ and more recently the Masters in Media Art and Architecture (MEDIAScapes) at SciArc 11’(Southern California Institute of Architecture) in Los Angeles.
Filipa has collaborated with different architectural practices around the world while simultaneously pursuing her own work and frequent collaborations. During the past years she has held positions at Zaha Hadid, Amanda Levete and Wilkinson Eyre Architects in London.
The work in interactive art and installations has grown from an interest in expanding the immediate ‘space’ of architecture, by using technology to connect it to the surrounding environment and context, in most cases the urban context. Her current research explores relationships between architecture and urban space, experience design and the body, environmental interaction and media art.
Filipa’s work has been featured at the Lisbon Experimenta Design Biennale in 2009, 2011 and 2013, and at several international exhibits in Copenhagen, Lisbon, London and Los Angeles. Recently her piece Liminoid Bloom*s was featured in the main exhibition for the Albuquerque ISEA 2012 (International Symposium on Electronic Art).
